Definitions, Concepts And Terminology of Diabetes

Types of Blood Sugar Conditions:

Too low a concentration = hypoglycaemia
Too high a concentration = hyperglycaemia.

When it comes to diabetes (pronounced as dye-a-BEE-teez) we are referring commonly speaking to a medical condition or disease.

Common Symptoms of Diabetes

  • the body does not properly control the amount of sugar in the blood
  • blood sugar results and remains too high.
  • It occurs most commonly when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use it properly.
  • Also known as diabetes mellitus
  • It is characterized as a metabolic disease
  • Deficient insulin leads to decreased carbohydrate utilization and enhanced utilization of lipids and proteins
  • It is a chronic condition
  • Patients need to control, manage, sustain and LOWER their abnormally high levels of glucose (sugar) in their blood.

The Types of Diabetes:

Insulin-dependent Diabetes (type I)

  • Type I diabetes results from a lack of adequate insulin secretion by the pancreas.
  • The body does not produce enough insulin
  • Usually appears in children and young adults.
  • Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetics tend to develop the disease early in life and are unable to control blood sugar levels because their bodies cannot make a special hormone called insulin.

Non-insulin dependent Diabetes (type II)

  • Type II diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes
  • Insensitivity of the tissues of the body to insulin secreted by the pancreas (insulin resistance).
  • Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), is the most common form of diabetes.
  • It is imperative that patients and those diagnosed with high levels of sugar in their blood should respond and do the right and best thing TO LOWER THEIR BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS!
  • If sugar and starch are not properly used by our bodies intervention is required for health and wellbeing.

So how do you effectively deal with this chronic health condition and disease, in which the body is unable to break down sugar and starches for energy?

Complications and Risks of Diabetes

How do you face the reality of potential risk, threat and complications like …?

  • even potentially death
  • hearing impairment
  • heart disease
  • neuropathy
  • poor circulation leading to loss of limbs
  • stroke
  • vision problems
